What Really Causes Dry Eye Disease? (It’s Not Just "Dry Air")

If you’ve lived in Winter Garden for a while, you know our Florida humidity usually keeps things pretty moist. So why do so many of my patients at New Vision Care still struggle with scratchy, irritated eyes?

Most people think Dry Eye is just a minor annoyance caused by a ceiling fan or a long day at the office. But as your eye doctor, I want to pull back the curtain: Dry Eye is a complex disease with a specific "villain" usually hiding in plain sight.

The Three-Part Tear Recipe

To understand the cause, you have to understand that your tears aren't just water. They are a precise mixture of three things:

  1. Mucus: Spreads the tears evenly.

  2. Water: Provides the moisture.

  3. Oil: The "lid" that keeps the water from evaporating.

In about 80% of the cases I see, the real cause of the burning and grit isn't a lack of water—it’s a lack of oil.

The Common Culprits

If your "tear recipe" is out of whack, it’s usually due to one of these three factors:

  • MGD (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction): You have tiny oil glands along your eyelids. If these get clogged (like a stopped-up straw), the oil can’t get out. Without that oil "lid," your tears evaporate into thin air seconds after you blink.

  • The "Screen Stare": When we look at phones or computers, we stop blinking fully. This means those oil glands aren't being "squeezed" to release moisture, causing them to dry up and clog over time.

  • Hormonal Changes: Life stages like perimenopause or even certain medications (like antihistamines for Florida allergies) can tell your body to produce fewer high-quality tears.

The Plan: Treating the Root, Not the Symptom

Walking into a drugstore and buying a random bottle of drops is like putting a bucket under a leaky roof—it doesn't fix the hole.

At New Vision Care, our plan is to find your specific "why." We use advanced diagnostics to look at your oil glands and tear quality. Whether it’s unblocking those glands or adjusting your daily habits, we focus on a long-term cure rather than a temporary band-aid.
