Why Do My Eyes Water If They Are Actually Dry?

It feels like a total contradiction, doesn't it? You come into New Vision Care complaining that your eyes are constantly streaming, and I tell you the problem is actually Dry Eye Disease. It sounds like telling someone they’re thirsty because they have too much water!

I see this every day here in Winter Garden. If you’re frustrated by eyes that won't stop watering, you’re dealing with a "villain" we call Reflex Tearing.

The Science in Layman’s Terms

Your eyes rely on a very specific recipe for tears. A healthy tear isn't just water; it’s a sophisticated sandwich of three layers:

  1. The Mucin Layer: Sticks the tear to the eye.

  2. The Aqueous Layer: The watery part that provides moisture.

  3. The Lipid (Oil) Layer: The "lid" that keeps the water from evaporating.

Most people with dry eyes are missing that top oil layer. When that oil is gone, your tears evaporate into the Florida air almost instantly. Your eye becomes irritated and sends a "panic signal" to your brain. Your brain responds by overproducing the only thing it can quickly—the watery layer.

The result? A flood of "poor quality" tears that don't stay on the eye long enough to do any good. They just run down your cheeks, leaving your eyes feeling just as gritty and dry as before.

The Plan for Relief

You shouldn't have to carry a tissue everywhere you go just to dab your eyes. At New Vision Care, we don't just give you "more water" (artificial tears). Our plan is to:

  1. Identify the Root Cause: We check your oil-producing glands (Meibomian glands) to see if they are blocked.

  2. Restore the Balance: We use specialized treatments to help your eyes produce that essential oil layer again.

  3. Stop the Reflex: Once your eyes feel protected, the "panic signal" stops, and the watering disappears.
